Personal History:
I was born and raised in Iowa to wonderful parents along with three brothers. I was blessed to know my grandparents when I was young and to be part of a close family with lots of cousins, aunts, and uncles, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, which makes me a great uncle! Just ask them!
Nevertheless, I became rebellious in my teenage years. But God showed me where I was headed and changed my direction in life. I served six years in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged as an ET1/E-6 (Electronics Technician/Petty Officer First Class). I had boot camp and school in Great Lakes, Illinois, where I had my life-changing experience. Shortly after that I was invited to Christian Fellowship’s Servicemen’s Center, was baptized in Jesus’ name, and have been involved in ministry ever since. I was stationed in Rota Spain, then a ship based out of Norfolk and then Portland, Maine where I was discharged.
I moved to Illinois and taught electronics to the Navy as a civilian instructor for three and a half years. During that time, I started doing church accounting as a volunteer, and as the ministry grew, ebbed, and flowed, so did the need for full-time bookkeeping, financial analysis, and reporting, etc. So, sometimes it was paid (never very much) and sometimes not, but it has been a labor of love that I learned to do through reading, research, and consulting with bankers and professionals.
I did various business ventures including real estate investing and being a Realtor, ABR (Accredited Buyers Representative) for four years. I earned licenses as a life insurance agent and a mortgage loan office the last year before moving to Virginia during which I also divested an S corporation vending business.
I made the move to Virginia because of the ministry’s decision to move its principal office to Norfolk. I currently serve as the volunteer Comptroller for our ministry and work full time at Old Dominion University, where I also recently received my MS (Accounting, 2022). In September I received my CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation.
My goal is to leverage web-based church accounting and management software and train teams so the ministry can gain maximum benefit of both centralized and decentralized accounting and data management. Navigating change through use of technology tools to allow our churches, fellowships, and missions, to thrive throughout the United States and the world is one of my major passions..
